1. Prize Competitions
1.1 Those who complete an 18 Clues Challenge may submit their final answer online to see if they were successful. The correct Challenge answer can only be established by successfully solving all 18 skill-based clues. Entrants who submit the correct Challenge answer online will qualify for entry into the Prize Competition. After the closing date, winners will be chosen at random from all correct entries. If more than one prize or prize package is offered, the first correct entry drawn at random will receive the 1st Prize, the second correct entry drawn will receive the 2nd Prize, and so on. Winners of each Prize Competition will be entitled to receive their prize in accordance with the terms set out below.
1.1.1 The 18 Clues Challenge is designed and operated as a skill-based prize competition. Participants must correctly solve the Challenge and submit the correct answer before being entered into the prize draw. The Challenge requires participants to apply knowledge, judgement, skill and effort and is intended to ensure that entry is not based on chance alone. 18 Clues maintains records and evidence supporting its assessment that the Challenge involves a sufficient degree of skill and judgement.
1.2 Each Prize Competition will be administered / promoted by 18 Clues Limited (18 Clues), the ‘Host/Promoter’. 18 Clues Limited is registered in England and Wales under company number: 15896177.
1.3 Prize packages on offer may be provided by 18 Clues, the ‘Host/Promoter’, and sometimes one or more third party ‘Prize Providers’.
1.4 These terms and conditions are the ‘General Terms’ which apply to every Prize Competition that 18 Clues administers.
1.5 Each Prize Competition may also have its own specific terms and conditions (‘Specific Terms’), which may be found on the website along with details of the current Prize Competition on offer.
1.6 These General Terms shall apply in addition to any Specific Terms, which may be in place for a specific Prize Competition. You should always read these General Terms together with the Specific Terms. If any provisions in the Specific Terms conflict with these General Terms, the Specific Terms will prevail.
1.7 We may change these General Terms at any time so you should check this page regularly for any changes. Changes will apply from the date that they are published on this page.
1.8 By entering any Prize Competition, you accept that you will be bound by these General Terms and any applicable Specific Terms.
1.9 Where we run promotions in collaboration with other companies, their details will be set out in the relevant Specific Terms.
2. Eligibility
2.1 Our Prize Competitions are open to any resident of England, Scotland and Wales aged 18 years or over who has purchased, or been gifted, an 18 Clues Challenge and submits a correct final Challenge answer in tandem with a valid Unique Reference Number (URN). Residents of Northern Ireland are ineligible for entry and the prize competition is void outside Great Britain.
2.2 Employees of 18 Clues, or any Prize Provider, members of their direct families, or any person directly associated with a promotion are not eligible to enter. Any entries submitted by such persons will be invalid.
2.3 In entering the Prize Competition you confirm that you are eligible to do so and are eligible to claim the prize package should yours be a winning entry.
2.4 We will not accept entries that have been automatically generated by computer, are incomplete, or are threatening or inappropriate.
2.5 We will determine eligibility acting reasonably and in accordance with these terms.
3. Entering a Prize Competition
3.1 To enter the Prize Competition you will need to visit the 'Submit Answer' page on the 18 Clues website, select a valid 10‑digit URN assigned to you from a drop‑down menu, and then submit the correct 18 Clues Challenge answer. The correct Challenge answer can only be established by successfully solving 18 skill-based clues. You will be asked to read these Prize Competition Ts & Cs, any Specific Terms relating to the prize package, and our Privacy Policy. You will further be asked to verify that you are 18 years of age or over. Entry into the Prize Competition is optional and requires no additional payment beyond purchase of the Challenge product. By submitting a correct final answer you will automatically be entered into the Prize Competition unless you tick the opt-out box on the submission form.
3.2 No free entry route is offered because the Challenge is operated as a skill-based prize competition. Entry into the Prize Competition requires successful completion of the Challenge and submission of the correct answer.
3.3 18 Clues currently runs twice‑yearly Prize Competitions, with prize packages varying each time. Each Prize Competition opens at 00:01 on the published start date and closes at 24:00 on the published closing date. The closing date for the current Prize Competition can be found under ‘Current Prize Competition’ on the Home Page. Any submissions received after the closing date will be entered into the next Prize Competition.
3.4 Entrants may not use automated entry software or any other mechanical or electronic means that permits any person to make multiple entries to a Prize Competition.
3.5 18 Clues takes no responsibility for any technical, communication or other problems that might prevent the receipt of the entrant’s details and accepts no responsibility for entries which are not visible due to entrants’ privacy settings, or incomplete. We cannot enter into correspondence with entrants who experience difficulties with the entry mechanism.
4. Winning and Prizes
4.1 Entrants must first submit the correct Challenge answer through ‘Submit Answer’ in the Header Bar on the 18 Clues website. The correct Challenge answer can only be established by successfully solving all 18 skill-based clues. After the closing date of each Prize Competition, winners will be chosen at random from all correct entries. Where multiple prizes or prize packages are available, winners will be chosen at random in accordance with the Specific Terms for that Prize Competition.
4.2 The prize draw will take place within seven days of the closing date, and the winning Unique Reference Numbers (URNs) will be published on our website at the same time, or such other time as set out in the Specific Terms. Unless set out otherwise in the Specific Terms, prize winners will be notified via the email address provided when they submitted their answer.
4.3 If we are unable to contact a winner to award a prize within 14 days of the notification email going out, or such other time as set out in the Specific Terms, then the winner forfeits their right to the prize and we reserve the right to choose another winner at random from the remaining correct entries.
4.4 We will collect only the information reasonably required to verify eligibility and prevent fraud.
4.5 18 Clues reserves the right to replace any part of a stated prize for an alternative prize of equal or greater value. Prizes are non-transferable and have no cash alternative.
4.6 We make no representation or warranty in relation to any of the prizes provided and we accept no responsibility for any loss, expense, or damage which is suffered or sustained in connection with a prize, or accepting or using any part of a prize, except for any liability which cannot be excluded by law, in which case that liability is limited to the minimum allowable by law. Your statutory rights are not affected.
4.7 We shall not be responsible for any additional expenses incurred by a prize winner in relation to a prize.
4.8 All stated prize values are at the recommended retail price in pound sterling and are, to the best of our knowledge and belief, correct at the time of printing. We take no responsibility for any fluctuations in prize values.
4.9 Any cash prizes will be paid directly into the prize winner's account.
5. Publicity
5.1 Personal information provided by entrants when entering a Prize Competition will be used by 18 Clues for the purposes of administering and fulfilling the Prize Competition and always in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
5.2 In the event that a prize is to be provided by a third party Prize Provider, we may pass on a winner’s details to the Prize Provider to enable them to send their prize directly to the winner. The Specific Terms will set out details of a Prize Provider and their Privacy Policy.
5.3 Where you have indicated your consent to receiving communications from 18 Clues about our offers, products, special offers and services, as part of entering a Prize Competition:
5.3.1 your email address will be added to our electronic mailing list accordingly;
5.3.2 any personal data you provide will be processed in accordance with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 and associated laws;
5.3.3 the way in which your data will be processed by 18 Clues will be in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
5.3.4 see also Condition 5.4 below with regard to the announcement of winners;
5.3.5 if you do not wish for the use of your details for marketing purposes at any time, you can select the unsubscribe option in the emails that are sent to you.
5.4 Under the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) requirements, 18 Clues must either publish or make available information that indicates that a valid award took place. To comply with this obligation, we may provide the surname and county of major prize winners to comply with regulatory requirements. If a prize winner objects to their name and/or county being published or made available, they should notify 18 Clues of this when responding to the notification email to claim their prize. In such circumstances we must still provide the information to the ASA, if requested.
5.5 By entering the Prize Competition, you agree to participate in any reasonable publicity required by us and/or the prize provider, at our cost, should you win a prize.
5.6 The Prize Competition is skill-based. Participants must correctly solve the Challenge before being eligible for entry into the prize draw. The Challenge is designed to require a degree of skill, knowledge and judgement such that success is not dependent on chance.
6. General
6.1 18 Clues reserves the right to disqualify any entrant who we reasonably believe violates the General Terms or Specific Terms and to require them to return any prize they may have won.
6.2 If for any reason any Prize Competition is not capable of running as planned as a result of any (including but not limited to) technical failures, unauthorised intervention, computer virus, mobile network failure, tampering, fraud or any other causes beyond our control which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of a Prize Competition, we reserve the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Prize Competition and/or to disqualify any individual who (whether directly or indirectly) causes (or has caused) the problem.
6.3 We may vary these General Terms or any Specific Terms or terminate a Prize Competition at any time at our absolute discretion if reasonably required to do so. Termination or variation of a Prize Competition is without liability to any entrant or other person. Where reasonably possible, valid entries received before termination will remain eligible for an alternative prize, rescheduled draw, or other appropriate remedy.
6.4 Our decisions relating to a Prize Competition are final, except where a decision is required to be reviewed by law.
6.5 A failure by 18 Clues to enforce any of the terms and conditions in the General Terms or Specific Terms in any instance will not give rise to any claim or right of action by any entrant or prize winner, nor shall it be deemed to be a waiver of any of our rights in relation to the same.
6.6 Except as specifically set out herein and to the maximum extent permitted by law, all conditions, warranties and representations expressed or implied by law are hereby excluded.
6.7 In the event that any provision of these General Terms or any Specific Terms are held to be illegal, invalid, void or otherwise unenforceable, it shall be removed from the remaining provisions which shall continue in full force and effect.
6.8 Our Prize Competitions are not sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or any other social media platform provider. Entrants agree to abide by the terms of service of those platform providers when entering a Prize Competition published on social media and further agree to release the social media sites from any liability arising from or as a result of any participation in such Prize Competition.
6.9 If you have any complaint relating to a Prize Competition, please contact us at info@18clues.co.uk with full details of your complaint. We will acknowledge receipt as soon as reasonably practicable and aim to provide a substantive response within 14 days.
6.10 These General Terms and any Specific Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction in relation to any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms and Conditions.
